FAQ // Answered Plainly

Questions, answered.

What principals and families ask us most — about protection, privacy, living underground, autonomy and how a commission begins. We answer plainly, and we describe capabilities as engineering design targets, never as guarantees.

01 // The Idea
What exactly does BunkerBuilt make?

Bespoke fortified residences — underground and safe-suite spaces engineered like civil-defense infrastructure and finished like a five-star home. From a safe suite within an existing house (The Vault) to a full underground family residence (The Sanctum) to an estate-scale complex (The Citadel), or a wholly one-of-one commission. No catalogue shells; every project is engineered to one site and one family.

Does it feel like a bunker inside?

No — that is the entire point. Engineered light wells bring real daylight below grade, ceilings are generous, airflow is designed for calm, and every surface is finished by an interiors atelier in board-formed concrete, walnut, stone and linen. The protection lives in the structure; what you live in is a residence.

Why "BunkerBuilt" if you don't sell bunkers?

The name is blunt on purpose — it says what we build without a euphemism. The work is the opposite of the name's cliché: quiet, warm and beautiful. We think the tension is honest, and memorable.

02 // Protection
How protected is a BunkerBuilt residence, really?

Each residence is engineered to a threat model built for your specific site — structure, sealed air, water, power and egress are designed to defined standards. We share the full engineering specification with you and your advisors so it can be independently reviewed. We are deliberate about language: we describe capabilities as design targets, not guarantees against every conceivable scenario.

What about air, water and power?

Sealed intake with CBRN-grade filtration, on-site water storage with multi-stage treatment, and solar-plus-battery-plus-generator power are all designed to operate independently of the grid. Autonomy is sized to your brief — commonly a 30-day-plus design target for The Sanctum, and a year or more for The Citadel.

Won't we feel trapped down there?

Every residence is drawn with a primary entrance and an independent, concealed second egress — you are protected, never trapped. Daylight, ceiling height and engineered airflow are all designed so the space reads as open, not enclosed.

03 // Privacy & Process
How private is all of this?

Completely. We hold every commission in strict confidence — no client names, no locations, and no case studies that could identify you, ever. Site visits and consultations are arranged discreetly, and our team works under confidentiality.

How does a commission begin, and how long does it take?

It begins with a private conversation and a site survey, followed by a threat model and a design brief you approve before anything is built. Timelines depend entirely on scale, site and permitting; we give you a realistic schedule once we understand the ground. We would always rather set an honest date than an optimistic one.

What does it cost?

Every residence is priced to its brief — the engineering, the site and the finish all move the number, so there is no meaningful "from" price. We give you a clear, itemised proposal after the initial survey. BunkerBuilt is a new atelier taking its first commissions now; we would rather quote you accurately than advertise a headline figure we can't stand behind.

Where do you build?

We take bespoke commissions across North America, siting each residence to the ground and the brief. To begin, send a private enquiry and we will arrange a confidential conversation about your site.
